The Joint Operations Center renamed after late Sgt. Maj. Elwood Imken
AUSTIN, Texas (July 9, 2019) – The Joint Operations Center based at Camp Mabry, in Austin, Texas, will be renamed and dedicated after the late Sgt. Maj. Elwood H. Imken, of Austin, for his extraordinary impact on the Texas Military Department. The renaming ceremony for the new Sergeant Major E.H. Imken Joint Force Headquarters-Texas Joint Operations Center, will take place July, 12, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Camp Mabry.
Imken's military service spanned more than 38 years from March 1967 through 2005. His career reached every echelon from platoon through division and every level of leadership, culminating as the Division Operations Sergeant Major for the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 4th Armored Division and 36th Infantry Division. Imken is known for his high degree of professionalism and dedication concerning the lives of Soldiers.
The Joint Operations Center provides the Texas Military Department with well-trained ready forces to support missions for the State and Nation at home and abroad. Imken was instrumental in the creation of the Joint Operations Center by using his extensive network to aid in disaster response efforts.
In addition to his impact in domestic operations, Imken played a huge role in establishing and sustaining community outreach programs such as Food for Families, a program that provides food to stock pantries across Texas. His planning efforts directly contributed to the one-day food drive collection of more than 1.5 million pounds of food in 2014.
Imken was inducted into the Texas Military Department Hall of Honor in 2016. The Hall of Honor recognizes outstanding Texas Air, Army, and State Guard Members. Imken died in 2018.
