FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLIC RELEASE:

Texas National Guard Prepares to Mobilize Up to 1,000 Additional Guardsmen and Women to Southwest Border

AUSTIN, Texas (June 21, 2019) - On Friday, Governor Greg Abbott announced that he will mobilize up to 1,000 additional Texas National Guardsmen and women to the Texas-Mexico border for a forthcoming mission. In the coming weeks, DHS will establish holding facilities in the Rio Grande Valley and El Paso for single adults entering the country illegally. The Texas National Guard troops will provide supplemental staffing support at the temporary holding facilities as well as supplemental enforcement support at ports of entry. Texas Guardsmen and women will be in a Title 32 U.S. code status, meaning that the mission will be federally funded and under the control of Governor Abbott.

More than 1,200 Guardsmen and women already support local, state and federal partner agencies as part of a combined effort to deter criminal activity along the Texas-Mexico border. The Texas National Guard has supported various state and federal operations along the border since 2006.
