FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLIC RELEASE:

Texas National Guard Mobilized In Support of Winter Weather Response

Texas Military Department Takes Steps to Ensure Safety of Service Members Deployed in Support of Operation Lone Star ahead of Winter Storm

AUSTIN, Texas (February 3, 2022) – As of 4 p.m., February 2, 2022, the Texas Military Department has mobilized numerous service members and tactical vehicles in support of the state’s winter storm response.

Service members are poised to provide support in Texas cities threatened by extreme winter conditions. Working in support of the Texas Division of Emergency Management and in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Guardsmen are providing assistance to first responders as needed.

Additionally, throughout this winter weather event, thousands of Texas Guardsmen continue to protect the Texas-Mexico border in support of the Texas Department of Public Safety and Operation Lone Star. All service members working on the front lines, who are exposed to the elements in support of this mission, have been issued cold-weather gear ahead of the winter storm. This winter weather gear, coupled with high-mobility multi-purpose vehicles equipped with heaters, will ensure our men and women stationed at security points along the Texas-Mexico border are able to keep warm throughout the winter weather event.

Furthermore, to ensure the safety of our service members deployed in support of Operation Lone Star, the Texas Military Department has worked with base camp housing vendors to ensure that housing trailers have been winterized, with access to backup generators, extra fuel, and surplus water trailers on site.

“I am proud of the work the Texas Guard is doing in support of our partner first responders, to help our neighbors and communities throughout this winter weather event,” said Maj. Gen. Tracy Norris, the adjutant general of Texas. “Be it along the Texas-Mexico border, or across Texas communities impacted by extreme winter weather, the men and women of the Texas National Guard continue to exemplify service above self.”
