The Texas Army National Guard recently received an armored squadron consisting of M1A1 Abrams tanks, recovery vehicles, and personnel positions from Pennsylvania National Guard’s 3rd Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment. This transfer grew the capabilities of the Texas Military Department and returned armor capabilities back to Texas for the first time since 2004. 

The 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, 3rd Squadron moved from Pennsylvania to the Texas National Guard Mobilization and Training Equipment Site on Fort Hood. The transfer of equipment and addition of over 500 personnel positions was conducted in phases and enhanced relationships with Fort Hood and the U.S. Army’s III Corps, known as “The Army’s Heavy Corps”. Under the Divisional Alignment Partnership (DAP) the 278th ACR falls under the command of the 36th Infantry Division.
